Fire Service Burst at a Secondary School in Emerald
Problem:
VIP were called to investigate a suspected burst on the fire service below the common area of one of the classroom blocks. Once onsite, we confirmed the fire service had burst over the weekend which had caused damage to the affected area.
After carrying out trace and leak detection to determine the most probable location of the burst and determine what other services may be located in this area, we found the burst had been caused by pipework being covered in overpour of concrete footing without protection to the pipes. Over time and movement the pipe had deteriorated and rubbed.
Our Response:
Firstly, our plumbers had the area cordoned off and made safe as a temporary measure.
Using specialised equipment, we carried out trace and leak detection to determine the most probable location of the burst and determine what other services may be located in this area.
This meant we are able to narrow down the location of the leak to a more precise area to minimise the impact of excavation works.
Our plumbers carefully excavated and exposed the fire service pipework and then carefully excavated by hand back along the trench to expose the burst. The burst was found to be within 500mm after a fire service branch on a 100mm galvanised pipe fire service line.
Our plumbers carried out supplying and installing new 100mm copper pipe work. They connected this new section 100mm copper pipe work to existing galvanised steel fire service line as required and reinstated water supply to fire service.
All works were tested to ensure everything was in working order.
All excavated areas and affected areas washed away by fire service burst were backfilled.
Before re-concreting the affected areas, we arranged and oversaw an electrician to check all electrical cables in the immediate area affected by the burst and to repair separated conduit joins to ensure the line is safe to concrete over.
